Dr. Marianne Tarun, a postdoctoral research associate at WSU’s Physics and Astronomy Department, made the serendipitous discovery when she left a sample of strontium titanate—a crystal used in jewelry and some electronic components—out on a table counter before testing it for conductivity.
“It’s nowhere near the level of electrical throughput of what super-conducting materials can achieve. However, it does hold a great deal of practical potential. For one, the effect works at room temperature unlike superconductors which only function at a fraction of a degree from absolute zero,” Gizmodo said.
“In standard computer memory, information is stored on the surface of a computer chip or hard drive. A device using persistent photoconductivity, however, could store information throughout the entire volume of a crystal,” McCluskey explained.— GMA News

I’m really excited and looking forward to do it — Alyssa Valdez
Philippine volleyball superstar Alyssa Valdez will try a new hat this coming weekend.
She’ll be putting aside her usual volleyball kit and knee pads in exchange for a microphone, an earpiece and a camera crew.
Valdez debuts as a post-performance host on Saturday in the much-anticipated UAAP cheerdance competition at the Big Dome.
The three-time UAAP and V-League Conference Most Valuable Player will interview members of cheerdance squads after each performance. She’ll feed viewers a deeper and fresh angles on each team’s preparation, reaction before, during and after their performance and juicy side stories.
“It’s really challenging for me kasi first time (ko mag-host) so I really have to ask siguro ang mga friends ko like sina Lau (Lehmann) on what to do sa mga ganoong instances,” said Valdez, who is coming off a runner-up finish in the V-League Reinforced Conference recently for Bureau of Customs.
Valdez added that it will be a new environment for her “kasi usually ako ‘yung ini-interview but now I think I’m the one who’s gonna interview and try to look for some interesting stories sa mga cheerdancers as athletes.”
“I’m really excited and looking forward to do it pero siyempre ako as a volleyball player kailangan ko munang mag-aral din at humingi ng mga advices sa mga courtside reporters,” said the former Ateneo de Manila Queen Eagle.
The 23-year-old hitter was also game when asked if she’s willing to try on a cheerleading uniform if given a chance.
“OK lang din naman talaga kasi it’s really a new environment sa akin. Pero feeling ko naman hindi nila papagawa ‘yun sa akin di ba? Umaasa po ako,” she joked. “Ok lang naman if it’s part of the (job).”
Defending champion National University guns for its fourth straight title against six other cheerdance squads from University of Sto. Tomas, Far Eastern University, University of the East, Ateneo, De La Salle and Adamson.
Last year’s third place winner University of the Philippines will skip the competition.
