It’s Pope Francis’ 80th birthday this weekend and well-wishers can now send him email greetings in seven languages.
Although the big day isn’t until Saturday, the Argentine-born pontiff already marked the occasion by blowing out a candle on a cake given to him during his weekly general audience Wednesday, but cautioned that early wishes “bring bad luck,” ANSA, the Italian News agency, reports.
Addressing his general audience, Pope Francis said “thanks to everyone for the wishes for my upcoming birthday, thank you, but I’ll say something that will make you laugh: in my homeland voicing wishes early brings bad luck and those who voice wishes early are a jinx.”
Those who couldn’t make it to the Vatican for a personal greeting can send Francis a birthday message by email in Italian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Polish and Latin, Vatican Radio reports.
A social media hashtag — #Pontifex80 — has also been created.
The pope won’t be taking the day off to celebrate. He will be working “just as normal,” his staff says, according to Vatican Radio.
