vivafilipinas25022025_1Filipinos gathered on Tuesday to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, honoring the historic movement that restored democracy in 1986.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) led the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at the People Power Monument in Quezon City, while the Human Rights Violation Victims’ Memorial Commission held a program to remember the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.

Meanwhile, at the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace (EDSA Shrine), the focus was on the faith component of the revolution. Rector Fr. Jerome Secillano emphasized the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s intervention, echoing the words of Cardinal Jaime Sin, who played a key role in the peaceful uprising. Priests and bishops led liturgical and sacramental activities, including the celebration of the Holy Mass to give thanks for the victory of democracy.

Despite being declared a special working holiday, some schools suspended classes in observance of the occasion.

The EDSA People Power Revolution ousted Ferdinand Marcos Sr. from power and installed Corazon Aquino as the country’s first female president. As the nation remembers this pivotal moment, many continue to call for vigilance in preserving democracy, justice, and truth.
