MANILA, PHILIPPINES — With heavy hearts, the nation bids farewell to a true legend. Pilita Corrales, lovingly known as Asia’s Queen of Songs, has passed away. She was 85.
The news was shared by her granddaughter, actress Janine Gutierrez, through a heartfelt Facebook post on Saturday.
“Pilita touched the lives of many, not only with her songs but also with her kindness and generosity,” Janine wrote. “She will be remembered for her contributions to the entertainment industry, but most of all for her love of life and family. Please join us with your prayers and kind thoughts as we celebrate her beautiful life.”
No cause of death was announced. Janine said details on memorial services will be shared soon.
To many, Pilita Corrales was more than a singer—she was the voice of generations, a comforting presence in Filipino homes, and a symbol of grace that never faded. Her songs were lullabies, love letters, and long embraces rolled into melodies that made us feel less alone.
She first captured hearts overseas, rising to fame in Australia with the song “Come Closer to Me.” But it was when she returned home that she truly became ours. With timeless hits like “A Million Thanks to You,” “Kapantay Ay Langit,” “Usahay,” and “Ang Pipit,” Pilita didn’t just sing—she gave people memories to hold onto.
Her elegance transcended the stage. She shone on television, hosting Your Evening with Pilita and appearing in numerous shows and films. Even in her later years, she continued to delight fans with special appearances, including in Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers.
But beyond the spotlight, Pilita was a mother, a grandmother, a friend. Her laughter filled rooms. Her hugs lingered. Her generosity touched people quietly, without need for applause.
Today, as her music plays once more in homes across the country, we remember a woman who sang with her soul—and in doing so, gave a piece of it to all of us.
Maraming salamat, Pilita. A million thanks to you.
