The traditional rites for a pope’s funeral were observed, beginning with the reading of a document that detailed Jorge Mario Bergoglio’s life and his contributions as the 266th Pope. The Vatican stated that his memory “remains in the heart of the Church and of all humanity.”

As part of the solemn ceremony, a white silk veil was gently placed over Pope Francis’ face, followed by the sprinkling of holy water. A bag containing coins and medals minted during his 12-year papacy was also placed within the coffin. The zinc casket was then sealed, bearing his cross, coat of arms, and a plaque inscribed with his papal name “Franciscus” and the dates of his life and pontificate.

Before his passing at the age of 88, Pope Francis expressed a desire for simpler burial arrangements, choosing interment at the Basilica of St. Mary Major instead of the traditional burial at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis died on Monday, April 21, at 7:35 a.m. following a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse. The Vatican reported that his final moments were peaceful, with his last words expressing gratitude to his longtime health aide.

The Church now prepares to bid farewell to a shepherd whose profound humility, compassion, and unwavering faith have left an enduring legacy across the world.
