Renowned Filipino Playwright Floy Quintos Passes Away at 63

vivafilipinas0427202412Manila, Philippines— Floy Quintos, a celebrated Filipino playwright, breathed his last on Saturday morning due to a heart attack, as announced by his family. Quintos, who recently turned 63, succumbed to the heart attack in the hospital emergency room.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, his niece Celina Quintos conveyed the news, paying tribute to his multifaceted roles not only as an esteemed playwright and director but also as a cherished family member and friend.

“Floy Quintos was not just a luminary in Philippine culture and the arts; he also illuminated the lives of those closest to him,” Celina shared, expressing the profound loss felt by Quintos’s loved ones and the broader artistic community.

Born Florencio Louis Antonio de la Cruz Quintos on April 17, 1961, in Manila, Quintos pursued his early education at the Ateneo de Manila for grade school and the University of the Philippines Integrated School for high school. He later earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from UP Diliman in 1985.

Quintos embarked on his professional journey as a journalist and editor, contributing to esteemed national newspapers like The Philippine Star. His theatrical journey commenced with acting roles in various Dulaang UP productions, gradually transitioning into directing in the late 2000s.

Melinda Quintos-De Jesus, Executive Director of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, fondly recalled Quintos as a gifted and compassionate individual, emphasizing his contributions both to their family and to broader societal discourse through his art.

Throughout his illustrious career, Quintos received numerous accolades, including nine Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature and recognition from the UP College of Mass Communication in its Glory Awards.

Quintos’s legacy lives on through his thought-provoking and socially relevant plays, with his latest work, “Grace,” scheduled for staging in May.

The wake will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapels in Quezon City, with further details to be announced by the family.
